4. Electricity networks and congestion

What is this week about?

The transmission and distribution networks are just as vital a part of the electricity system as any other. Without the networks, how would the electricity be transported from generators to consumers? How are the network tariffs established and how do they affect our final electricity price?

In addition, this week will teach you the basics of congestion management. What happens when electricity demand between areas exceeds the network capacity? And how do we solve these problems?

The final week calls for the most complex Merit Order assignment yet. Now, not only do we have two countries with differing energy mixes but their markets are coupled and generated energy can be traded. This, along with quiz based assignments, will test your knowledge on energy networks and network congestion.

By the end of this week, you will:

  • Be able to understand the role of the energy network
  • Be able to discuss how network tariffs are established and implemented
  • Be able to explain what effect a lack of sufficient network capacity can have on the energy networks

After this final week, you will have a more developed understanding of the energy system and all its different elements. Good luck!
